Laakirchen, 26th August 2020 / Following today’s announcement by the Swedish SCA Group about discussions regarding a possible closure of its paper machines in Ortviken (Sweden) and consequently possible effects on various corporate divisions of the group, the Austrian paper manufacturer Laakirchen Papier AG comments on this issue as follows:

Heinzel Group is a member of the “4evergreen” alliance, which strives to increase the share of fiber-based packaging in order to sustainably reduce the impact on climate and the environment.

Since the beginning of June 2020, Dr. Kurt Maier (CEO of Heinzel Group) has been the new President of Austropapier, the Association of the Austrian Paper Industry.

Clear commitment to continued supply of customers with paper and pulp

As in the past years, Heinzel Group supported the Teach for Austria week in Vienna again in 2020, and for the first time also in Upper Austria.

Investment in the production of unbleached pulp

Heinzel Sales, the sales network of Heinzel Group, is happy to announce the addition of Matthew Burke as Sales Director to its pulp and paper trading subsidiary North Rim in Vancouver, Canada. Matthew is responsible for developing global sales for North American pulp and paper producers on behalf of North Rim with immediate effect.

Strengthening Heinzel's Sales Network in North America. Heinzel Sales, the sales network of Heinzel Group, is pleased to announce the addition of Tomas Jonson as Executive Vice President to its sales and trading Business in North America.

Built with an investment volume of 130 million euros in a construction time of 17 months, the new PM3 can produce 100,000 metric tons of kraft paper per year.

- Sales revenues up 14% to EUR 2.1 billion - EBIT (EUR 195 million) and net income (EUR 145 million) more than doubled - Net debt further reduced despite investments of EUR 127 million and acquisitions

The investments of recent years have had a positive effect on both the levels of energy use and CO2 emissions at the Laakirchen paper mill. This improvement is demonstrated clearly by the Paper and Carbon Profiles, which represent the established method within the industry of showing environmental impact and provide an overview of the relevant parameters. Moreover, Laakirchen Papier AG voluntarily commissioned Quality Austria to undertake an examination of these calculations.

Less than a year ago, Koehler Paper Group announced the launch of a large-scale investment in Kehl, Germany, as the first step towards a new paper machine on which to produce papers for flexible packaging. heinzelsales will act as distribution partner for the marketing of the papers in France, Spain and Portugal.

In recent months, the reconstruction of the Danzermühl hydropower plant has made massive headway.

In 2019, Laakirchen Papier is to invest roughly EUR 4.5 million in the paper machine PM 11, which manufactures SC papers.

Since the spring of 2018, the responsibilities for the sale of “Grapho” (SC paper) and “Starboard” (containerboard) have been divided up. The aim of this new sales structure is to provide every customer group with optimum support on a specific segment basis and use recognisable potential with even greater efficiency.

This year we are celebrating our company’s 70th anniversary. Its history began in 1948 when it was founded by my granduncle Wilfried Heinzel in Austria.

We are proud to inform that we have started a sponsorship of the beekeepers Pannonische Imkergemeinschaft. Dozens of their beehives have been placed at our sister company‘s organic farm Domaine Albrechtsfeld in Austria.

Sales network of Heinzel Group establishes base for paper and board sales in Southeast Asia

Heinzel Group increased its sales revenues by roughly 3% compared with the previous year to EUR 1,816.5 million in 2017. All companies of the two business areas, Trading and Industrial, recorded increases in both sales revenues and earnings, which were significant in some cases - with the exception of Laakirchen Papier.
